The brand new 2.3 EcoBoost Focus ST has a very small turbo direct from the factory, the design brief from Ford wasn’t to make power, it was to make torque and ecconomy. It’s very simple to see whilst custom mapping the car that exhaust gas flow is diminishing higher up in the rev range.
There is only one solution for this and that’s to increase exhaust gas flow by machining the exhaust housing and adding a turbine shaft plus exhaust wheel with a larger diameter.

Top end power is all about exhaust gas flow, so what do we do to this new X37?
We follow the tried and tested route by making both sides of the internals of the turbocharger larger, so we add the following:
– X37 custom turbine shaft with 9 blades (not 10) and 4.5mm bigger outer diameter
– Custom machined exhaust housing to accept this larger wheel
– Larger thrust bearing to aid reliability and cope with the added loads inside the unit
– We replace the inlet wheel with a new 7 blade rather than the old 6 blade and we increase the size of the wheel from
– 46.00mm-59.00mm to a 50.8mm-66.00mm
– The alloy compressor cover is machined to add extra flow and accept the new larger wheel
As yet the unit has not been fitted to a vehicle and mapped to suit but if the theory, CFD and calculations about flow are correct this unit will comfortably sit the new Focus ST Mk4 EcoBoost above 400bhp.
