The Mk3 generation of Focus ST Diesel is perfect to tune. Ford have delivered a much more laid back power delivery than the ST250 petrol version, a little bit too laid back the Pumaspeed development team believed.
The Team looked at various methods to tune the new Focus ST Diesel and quickly called on experts at MAXD to develop not only a remap calibration but actually design the protocols to talk to the ECU as nothing was available at that time.
The MAXD boys took the customer donated development car in hand and in the space of 2 weeks developed the communication protocols and the new Stage 1 MAXD remap to allow the DIY enthusiast to do all the tuning at home using the programmer shown in the photos.
We weren’t finished there however, after owning two development cars ourselves, stage 1 became stage 1+ and finally stage 1R after months and months of development, datalogging and revisions. The MAXD Stage 1R calibration now covers the Focus ST Diesel Mk3 and delivers more power and torque than any other competitor mapping, adding up to 50bhp and delivering a monstrous 90Nm of extra torque..
Those sound like the power figures of a real hot hatch and make the Focus ST Diesel a real gem to drive with effortless pulling power and urgency.
MAXD keep the power delivery smooth and progressive, but add enough excitement to make the car feel more like a true performance car rather than a mundane diesel. Through testing the stage 1R map was found to deliver peak torque a staggering 500rpm lower in the rev range than compared to stock and the Bluefin. This low down kick of torque gives you effortless acceleration and in gear pace, no need to work the gearbox and engine too hard when going for an overtake.

Stage 1R – 230-240bhp and 380-400nm
1.5 Ecoboost X-27 280 Billet 7 Blade Hybrid Turbocharger
- New Large Bore Turbine shaft with Clipped back blades
- New Large Bore Extended Tip 7 Blade Billet compressor wheel
- Unique Design and Geometry
- CNC re-profiled compressor cover to match new X-27 billet alloy wheel
- Motorsport Heavy Duty thrust bearing assembly

The X-27 turbo range has now expanded to cover the newest Ford 4 cylinder engine.
Pumaspeed have now harnessed the mighty X-27-300 technology from the 1.6 Ecoboost Hybrid Turbo and put the same internals into the turbo from the new 1.5 Ecoboost creating the X-27-280 which with the correct remapping and hardware can push up to 280 bhp and 400nm
Pumaspeed now have a Hybrid turbo solution for any 1.5 Ecoboost car in the Ford range , Mondeo , Kuga, Focus or the latest Fiesta
